Women's Healthcare Associates of Redding

What is a gynecologist?

A gynecologist is a doctor that specializes in women’s healthcare, focusing on the reproductive system. After four years of medical school training, a gynecologist must undergo an additional four years of specialized training and receive certification from the American Board of Gynecologists.

Dr. Mooney and Dr. Peña are both board-certified gynecologists ready to assist you with a variety of gynecological concerns, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Menstruation
  • Fertility issues
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Reproductive disorders
  • Sexually transmitted diseases

Women’s Healthcare Associates of Redding offers advanced diagnostics and innovative treatment options for women’s healthcare issues, specialist referrals, and education.

When should I see a gynecologist?

Gynecology visits are recommended for females starting around the age of 13 when their first menstrual cycle occurs. By establishing an early relationship with a trusted gynecologist, a teenage girl is more likely to be comfortable and use open and honest communication during future visits.

Dr. Mooney and Dr. Peña encourage gynecology care as soon as you plan to become sexually active. They offer family planning services and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases to protect your reproductive health.

Dr. Mooney and Dr. Peña recommend annual gynecology visits to ensure your reproductive and overall health and well-being.

What happens during an annual gynecology visit?

During a routine visit, your doctor discusses any questions or concerns you have about your sexual health. He also reviews your personal and family medical history to determine if additional screenings are necessary for cancer, cysts, and fertility issues due to existing medical conditions.

Your doctor performs a routine pelvic exam where he checks for abnormalities of the reproductive system, including ovarian cysts and fibroids. He also administers a Pap test to check for the presence of precancerous or cancerous cervical cells.

As part of your annual wellness check, your doctor does a manual breast exam to identify lumps or other irregularities. If you’re over the age of 40 or have a history of cancer in your family, he may recommend an annual mammogram to check for signs of breast cancer.

What is a urogynecologist?

Dr. Mooney is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist, the only one in the far North State, specializing in pelvic floor disorders. He diagnoses and treats conditions that cause dysfunction in the pelvic floor organs, including the muscles, tissue, and nerves that can result in urinary incontinence, bowel issues, and pelvic organ prolapse. Please click here to read the Pelvic Floor Dialogues.
